Touring Cambridge Bay

I thought I'd better take a break from unpacking to take some pictures in and around the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay.  I am still feeling under the weather but thought I'd better get out before the snow starts.  So off we went, Craig, myself, Hannah, Molly and Blitz all packed in the Ranger, thankfully it is a crew cab.  There are lots of pictures tonight so please take your time and enjoy.

Craig first took me to the water where we seen a couple of Canadian Coast Guard ships, a barge and the Clipper Adventure cruise ship.  After that we drove by the airport, golf course, yes they even have a golf course here and the North Warning site where Craig works.

We continued our travels through town past the dumps and the two graveyards on our way to Mount Pelly.  Inuit legend states that Mount Pelly, Baby Pelly and Lady Pelly are the graves of a family of giants that came to Victoria Island and starved and now that is where they lay...dad, son and mother.  I only seen Mount Pelly and Baby Pelly, could not see Lady Pelly as there was snow in the distance.  Mount Pelly is about 660ft and you can see it from our home.  We didn't climb it today but will someday.

The roads are to be experienced here in the north, very rough and bumpy.  There is not one part of the road that is smooth and everyone here drives a 4 x 4 or an ATV, gotta get me one of them, an ATV that is. They received alot of rain here these past couple of weeks so the potholes are extreme.  Winnipegers you have nothing to complain about. haha

The land is amazing up here, to some it is all rock but the beauty is there you just have to look.  Everywhere we turned there was a new pond, stream or lake and each and everyone had a different look to it.  There is a stream that goes right by the graveyards and Craig said once the spring run off comes so does the Arctic Char.  The waters are so crystal clear you can see the rocks below and I bet it is damn cold.  Just past this stream we seen one lonely musk ox, Molly and I were very excited to see our first one.  Don't know if that excitement will ever change for either one of us.  We also seen a swan in one of the lakes but could not get a good picture as it was too far away.

After touring we dropped off the dogs at the house and went to the Northern store to purchase a few more groceries.  YIKES!!  Spent over $200.00 on...well not much.  To give you examples, a small can of PAM was $12.99, Ketchup was $7.19, HP sauce was $8.19, 4 kiwis were $5.16, cheese was $15.59 and a small pork roast was $33.30.  There is such a thing up here as food mail which our friend Sheila will tell me all about it, right Sheila.  I think you order your food online from Edmonton and it arrives by mail and it is much less expensive.

After that we stopped off at Jim and Sheila's to pick up our small barge order of kitty litter, cases of cat food and some pop.  I was driving and got lost between the Northern store and their home but did find my way back to our place, thank God Craig was with me. Who knew you could get lost in a town of about 1500, no driving jokes Randy! haha

When we arrived home I made dinner for us as Craig tried to get the TV working.  The temperature here today was hovering around the 0'c mark so working outside wasn't pleasant.  It was a good day here spending time with Craig as Sundays are his only day off.  Tomorrow I will unpack the 6 remaining boxes and try to get things organized so I can start painting this week.

Good night all!
