Blizzard
Here I am doing my blog as there is a blizzard outside. It started here through the night and became worse around mid-day and is continuing until tomorrow. Craig spent the night at the site as he knew he probably wouldn't make it there this morning and he is not coming home tonight. Hopefully he will make it home tomorrow after work.
At one point this afternoon I couldn't even see the house across the street from us. There are no trees here to help block with wind, the houses & buildings help but out in the open you do not see anything. Where Craig works, it is about 2 miles from town, on top of a hill and out in the open so they can not even see the town or the airport today. The town was literally shut down about 1pm today and I noticed that the kids were not in school today either. It is not snowing alot but what is on the ground is being picked up and blown around with 40 knots wind. The temperature is not bad sitting about -10'c better than yesterday where the thermometer was sitting at -23'c. Burrrrr
Yesterday and today I got that look from Molly "You've got to be kidding, I'm not going out there." I literally had to push her bum outside so that she could go for her pee and poo poos. Hannah & Blitz really don't care, running and digging in the snow today, they looked like snowman when they came back in the house.
I took a couple of pictures from our back door and outside our windows which I will share with you tonight. If it calms down tomorrow I will take more pictures to share. As for tonight, Jim & Sheila are coming over to keep me company; they have a Hummer and do not live that far away.
Talk soon!

Arctic Dogs
Alright you all knew it was coming so here is my little rant about the Arctic dogs. I wouldn't call it a rant I guess maybe a better word would be my opinion.
Some dogs are treated very well, living indoors, getting fed regular meals and getting some kind of attention. I have even seen a small Papillon and Dobi with booties and a sweater on going for a walk. Now I don't feel so bad when our dogs go out with theirs on. Some of the outside dogs do have shelter and are fed on a regular basis and yes once in awhile the owner will pass them by and give them a pat on the head.
Other dogs are on a very short chain with no shelter and getting fed whenever the owner thinks about it. I know it is a different way of life up here and I am not here to be a hero and to save all these lives. Alot of these dogs are not spayed or neutered so reproduction is always going on. I have seen pack of dogs running free and getting into fights with dogs that are tied up, no chance for fight or flight. I just can not get my head around the idea of why some people have dogs and do not look after them.
The Hamlet of Cambridge Bay does have a rabies vaccine clinic but only a handful of people show up - these clinics are FREE! I truly think that they should go from door to door and give a rabies vaccines to every dog in this community. My God that is all we need is a rabies outbreak here. There is always the possibility as residents have told me that the wolves and foxes come right into town sometimes and again those dogs that are tied up do not have a fighting chance.
When asked I will do what I can to help these Arctic dogs. There is a bake sale here on November 13th to help raise money to fix a donated building for the stray dogs so of course I baked a boxful of goodies. It makes me sad to think of what kind of life some of these dogs have, not all dogs here but some. I wish I could wave my magic wand and give the life that they deserve.
The pictures today are of some of the dogs here.

First Caribou
So you could say I was a little excited when I seen my first caribou today. I took Craig to work after lunch as I needed to pick up some baking supplies. Of course I had to grab my camera even though Craig said 'you don't need your camera'. Oh but I try not to leave home without it as you just never know what you may see.
On my way back from dropping him off something caught my eye on the right and there he/she was big & beautiful...my first caribou. Not sure if he was a male or female as I believe they both have antlers. When they run I find them to be very graceful and smooth, like they are gliding on the snow. He ran beside the truck and then cut in front, I was a bit frantic as I was trying to watch him, grab my camera and control the excitement of Molly & Blitz. I slammed on the brakes, put the truck into park and jumped out of the truck and got about 4 shots of him before he was too far away. I need a bigger lens!! A local woman was in a truck behind me and she stopped and watched the caribou also, then she drove up beside me and told me to watch behind me as there may be more. Unfortunately there were no more that followed. I did turn around and headed to the docks to see if I could see any down there, I did see a herd across the bay area but they were too far for me to take any pictures. Again, I need a bigger lens!! haha
So that was my excitement today. I am loving the Arctic life; the people, scenery and wildlife. I may not appreciate it next month when it is 24 hour darkness, but you just never know. Vitamin D here I come!
Millie and her husband Andy came over yesterday afternoon. Millie works at the Hamlet and they are trying to start a dog shelter up here with the help of others. On November 13th they are having a bake sale so of course I am baking up a storm these days to help them out. Sounds like bake sales go over with a bang up here, selling a loaf of banana bread for $10.00. Someone donated a building to them for the dogs so they are trying to raise enough funds to fix it up next summer. And you know me I will lend a helping hand whenever and wherever I can.
Tonight I want to go to the Arctic Closet as they are selling original prints, it is just down the street from us so it will be a nice walk and you just never know what I may find there. Tomorrow evening Millie will be introducing me to some new people as I am going over to clip their dog's nails. I don't mind helping people out with their dogs and it is a good way to meet new people and of course their dogs.
Only a couple of pics today of the caribou that I seen. I still feel my heart pound when I think about it.
