Roaring 20s Hit the Bay

What a crazy few days I had.  I arrived an hour late in Yellowknife on Thursday which means that my two hour flight ended up being close to 6 hours.  I took the milk run and we will do it again when we head south in January.  ARGGGG!

 

I had a CT scan booked at 8am the following morning and then a doctor appt from there.  After talking to me he sent me back to imaging to do a round of x-rays.  Then back to his office so in the end I spent all morning at Stanton Hospital without no real answers why I am getting numbness and pain in the ankle.  He said he wanted me to wear the air cast for another 8 weeks but it could be less time once the radioigist has a good look at both the CT scan and x-rays.  A report will be sent to the Health Centre here once it is completed.  So in the meantime I am stuck wearing this stupid boot and the best thing is that I head to Florida in a couple of weeks with it....should be fun at customs.

 

I was delayed 4 hours in Yellowknife on Saturday due to mechanical problems with the plane, but what else is new, either delays for mechanical or weather.  We actually were boarded and sat on the runway for it seemed like eternity, then headed back to the terminal.  I knew then it wasn't good.

 

I was kinda on a tight schedule as I was asked to do some pictures for the Cambridge Bay Childcare Auction this year and yes it was on Saturday.  I thought I would have all afternoon at home to have a nap and get ready for the gala.  But nooooo, I arrived at 5pm and by the time Craig picked me up and we got home it was 5:30pm and the night of fun began at 6:30pm.  I probably had the quickest shower on record (someone phone Guiness) and was drying my hair and putting on my fishnet sockings at the same time.  So much fun.

 

Once we arrived at the roaring 20s event it was tons of fun.  There were many flapper girls, some glam girls and of course the gangsters.  My story for the night in regards to why I was wearing a boot and not high heals was that I fell off the stage doing the Charleston.  haha  The people involved in this function did an amazing job in the decorations and getting some great prizes. Chef Andy and his students did another delicious job preparing the meal.  We did donate to the cause by trying to get some prizes but were either out bid at the last minute or our number wasn't picked.  It's ok as it went to a good cause and we had a blast, well worth the money spent.

 

The following day we took the dogs out but we all didn't last long as the wind picked up and was getting too cold for everyone.  We also watched the Grey Cup, I was hoping for a Calgary win but deep down inside I knew that Ricky Ray and his Toronto team would win. I was correct and that's all I have to say about the Grey Cup. lol

 

The days are getting really short with the sun rising at 10:46am and setting at 12:50pm today.  Along with the short time we have with the sun it is very cold with the temps & windchill will reach a bombing -46'c tomorrow.  Yikes time to head south soon!

Christmas Photo Shoot - Canine Style

I played around with the dogs tonight to try to get some holiday pictures of them.  My old girl Hannah got really tired after only 15 minutes of picture taking and the evidence is in a couple of pictures.  The Shorthairs were great and even the boy listened to me and stayed until I was finished.

 

A short blog entry tonight as I am off to Yellowknife on Thursday for medical and I have to get a few things completed around the house.  I am heading there as I have a CT scan and ortho doctor appointment on Friday, from there I will find out if surgery is needed on my ankle. I arrive in YK about 5 hours after leaving Cambridge Bay, taking the milk run this time.  Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak first and then off to YK - a 2 hour flight will end up being 5 hours.

 

I should be home on Saturday, that is if the doctor doesn't keep me there.  I am hoping I return home on Saturday as we have the Cambridge Bay Day Care Auction to attend and Grey Cup is the next day.  The Day Care Auction has a theme every year and this year it is the Roaring 20s, yes I have a flapper dress and accessories (including my soft cast) and Craig has his gangster suit.  I was asked to take some candid pictures of the evening so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am back from medical.

MOvember Weekend

MOvember hit Cambridge Bay this past weekend with a fundraising evening on Saturday night, called MO Music.  Latitude 69 was the entertainment for the evening and was ushered in by Kelli and her bag pipes.  We had an evening of laughs with friends, ate some yummy desserts and actually came home with a couple of prizes.  Our friend Angela did another amazing job at organizing this event and raised just shy of $4000.00 for prostate cancer research.

 

The afternoon prior to this was the annual Christmas Bazaar and this year I had a helper as Craig took a personal day.  We arrived at the school to set up around 11am and the doors opened to the public at 1pm.  Prior to the doors being opened we did our rounds and purchased some homemade soaps and some arctic char antipasta.  It was nice to see many people attend this year's bazaar and I would like to thank everyone who stopped by my table to say hi and to the ones who purchased a picture or two.

 

We were very wiped yesterday so Craig and I spent the day on the couch watching the CFL semi-finals.  It was a windy day here yesterday and at times it looked like a blizzard outside.  Today the sun was bright which means the temperatures were cold, really cold with a windchill at -42'c.

 

My buddies Les and Tyler from Department of Fisheries and Oceans will arrive here on Wednesday for meetings so I will have another busy week.  It will be great to hang out with them as we haven't seem them for a few months. 

 

I'm still wearing the soft cast and I will be heading to Yellowknife in less than two weeks for a CT scan and an appointment with an orthopedic doctor.  I am hoping that they will finally find out what is going on with my ankle and also I hope that they fix it....soon!

Rankin Inlet or Bust

I just arrived home this afternoon from being away for six days for meetings in Rankin Inlet with our head office and the other subsidiaries of Nunavut Development Corporation.  It was great to finally meet the other managers within NDC, I have talked to many of them and now I can finally put a face to the voice.  I left Rankin Inlet yesterday and lucky for me I did as there was a blizzard warning in effect starting today.  I was told that sometimes you could be stuck in Rankin for days, flights going to Yellowknife only run Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.  There are no direct flights from Cambridge Bay to Rankin so you have to spend the night in Yellowknife, not a bad thing as you can shop before you head out the next day.  Because of the delay in Rankin I missed the grocery stores so I headed over to Walmart!

 

I wished the sun was up more in Rankin as I loved the scenery.  Brian our business advisor met Stephane and I at the airport and after checking into our hotel, he drove us around so we could take some pictures.  It was amazing to see the Hudson Bay, even if it was through cloudy skies and  fog sometimes. The fog rolls in very quickly and sometimes moves out just as fast.  NDC also has a arts and crafts store, Ivalu and of course I went shopping.  I purchased two amazing carvings from local artists, one hunter and one drum dancer.  I really debated another one, a narwhal but decided I spent enough.

 

Temperatures dropped the further west and north I went, landing back home in Cambridge Bay it was a bit shocking as temps were at -25'c with the windchill.  After only being away for a short time I really noticed the amount of time the sun is up.  Today it rose at 8:58am and at 2:29pm is said goodnight.  I can't believe that in 3 weeks it will set and not rise for about 6 weeks.

 

I will head to work tomorrow morning to get caught up with some paperwork.  Tomorrow night Craig has to tear down his gear as Latitude 69 will be playing at Mo Music, a fundraising event on Saturday evening to help raise funds for men's prostate cancer.  He actually has a bit of a moustache for the Movember event.  I will be busy on Saturday also as I am in the annual Christmas Bazaar and then I head over to the community hall to help set up for Mo Music.
